Suppin’ a spirulina smoothie

written by Sally Hills March 6, 2018

Back on the straight & narrow this week after three days working from home last week and a weekend of lots of wine! 🍷🍷My one saving grace was that I did do the CrossFit Open 18.2 on Friday eve…. was a killer! 55 double dumbbell squats & 55 over bar burpees…. only managed a 40kg power clean after that (failed a 50kg!) but was good enough for me! I was glad to have finished the squats & burpees to reach the clean within the prescribed 12 mins 👊🏋️‍♀️ The snow is pretty much gone now and I’m in the midst of another busy week at work. My breakfasts will be dark choc & spirulina smoothies, let’s do this!

According to Wikipedia, Spirulina is a nutrient rich algae that we can consume; containing carbs, fat and complete proteins (containing all essential amino acids), essential nutrients like B vitamins thiamin and riboflavin, and dietary minerals iron and manganese. Having read this, I thought I’d give it a go! A tbsp. is plenty in a smoothie; gives a fresh flavour. Anymore than this and it’s bound to taste more like fish feed (the powder certainly smells like that!). I do love it’s deep green colour and the way it always reminds me of Uncle Bryn in Gavin and Stacey  🤗

“Plankton it is, Gav. Pure vegetable plankton.

Full of vitamins and minerals.

Cheers!”

Note: It may have adverse interactions when taken with prescription drugs, particularly those affecting the immune system and blood clotting (Wikipedia article).
